La Rampa

La Rampa

“La Rampa” (so-called by the Vellatsu, Villeneuve’s inhabitants), leads to the fortress of Châtel-Argent; it’s a great staircase dug into the rock overlooking the village.

Nearly in the middle of the way there’s the date 1817 carved into the rock, which is probably the year when the ramp itself was made.

As a matter of fact, formerly the access to St Mary’s church was by extremely difficult paths, going up to the castle and then down to the church.

At the end of this easy route, the road levels and leads to the municipal churchyard and to St Mary’s Church; going on an uphill path, you get to Châtel-Argent’s donjon.
